““Disability as Diversity: How to Reduce Ableism on Campus” is the title of Dr. Stephanie Cawthon’s lightning talk session on Friday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m. at the inaugural Social Justice Research Forum at The University of Texas at Austin.
In just five minutes, the lightning talk will educate attendees to recognize and eliminate ableism, design with diversity in mind, and lead with intention.
Also, Dr. Cawthon’s mentee, Ana Guadalupe Vielma, will do a poster presentation at the forum, “Effects of a Difference-Education Intervention on Financial Stress in First-Gen Students.” Vielma is a second-year doctoral student in the Human Development, Culture, and Learning Sciences program in the Department of Educational Psychology at the College of Education. Vielma is also the author of First-Generation College Students and COVID-19: How Higher Education Can Improve Its Support (and Better Understand Us), a recent guest blog post and infographic,
The Social Justice Research Forum is virtual event that is free and open to the public. It strives to advance equity in all its forms through shared scholarship, dialogue, and transdisciplinary collaboration. In addition to the lightning talks and poster presentations, panels will discuss pressing and pervasive issues from systemic racism in law enforcement to an analysis of college president responses to George Floyd’s murder.
