Stephanie W. Cawthon, PhD, and two colleagues will present a webinar, Learning Growth Patterns of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students, that will dispel common misconceptions and share important study findings.

The one-hour online webinar on October 28, 2020, is organized by NWEA in collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin and Rochester School for the Deaf to focus on research and accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing students.

Dr. Cawthon will be joined by Johny Daniel, PhD, Lecturer in the Department of Special Education at Wheelock College of Education & Human Development at Boston University, and North Cooc, EdD, Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education and Center for Asian American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin, to present the key findings of their research study of learning growth patterns. It will include:

  • Academic growth trajectories for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in grades 2-8

  • How academic trajectories for students who are deaf compare to typically developing students in grades 2-8

  • Implications for instruction and programming

In the second part of the webinar, Jessica M. Meissner, Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Travel Abroad Program Advisor at Rochester School for the Deaf, will address how to remove barriers in distance learning classrooms for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
