Dr. Stephanie Cawthon has long served as the Director of Research and Evaluation for Drama for Schools, an arts integration professional development program housed in the Department of Theater and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin. Her collaboration with Associate Professor Katie Dawson has taken them both across Texas and around the world.
The international work of Drama for Schools is an essential pillar of the program. The beauty of the arts integrated approach to learning is that it reflects and embodies the local cultural context, making it a rich opportunity for international partnerships. Drama for Schools has active partnerships in places such as Australia, Japan, and Poland, to name a few.
Together with the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Drama for Schools is launching the Arts Integrated Teaching Community (AITC) workshop series — the fruit of several years of engagement with the BiH education community. In a series of virtual workshops and virtual community meet ups hosted by U.S. arts integration experts, teachers in BiH will be able to network, learn new skills, and share what they are working on with students.
Dr. Cawthon’s presentation, Disability as Diversity: Thinking about Accessibility for All Students in Your Arts Integration Activities, is online on Tuesday, March 22. Drawing upon nearly three decades of work at the intersection of disability and teaching, Dr. Cawthon will lead an interactive session that will explore the concept of accessibility and consider how arts integrated teaching approaches can be used to create a more inclusive learning experience.
