Access to infinity, and beyond!

I recently had the chance to get to know Sheila Xu, and I felt inspired to share her story with you.

Sheila is a pilot, researcher, and advocate who works to make human exploration accessible to all. As the first Deaf Asian female pilot and one of the first Deaf participants in a commercial analog astronaut program, she is redefining who belongs in the cockpit and beyond.

Sheila conducted experiments with AstroAccess on a zero-gravity parabolic flight. She also leads strategic initiatives that connect STEM, disability, policy, and the space and aviation sectors.

Her work focuses on improving multimodal communication systems in human exploration activities. She ensures sensory differences are recognized as assets, not obstacles, in high-stakes environments.

Sheila believes that when we “design for the margins,” we improve safety, efficiency, and mission success for every explorer.

Sheila’s credentials are exceptional. She holds master’s degrees in public policy and business administration from Harvard and Wharton, along with a Bachelor of Science from MIT.

As a fierce advocate for Deaf and Disabled leadership, Sheila continues to show how these communities drive innovation.

Sheila is not just aspiring to become a Deaf astronaut. She is helping architect a more inclusive future for humanity, both in space and on Earth.

Inclusive Spaceflight is coming to SXSW!

Along with her colleagues, Shiela is presenting at SXSW in Austin, Texas in just a few short days. Their topic is both exciting and otherworldly:

Zero gravity, Zero Barriers: Future of Inclusive Spaceflight

If you are heading to SXSW be sure to put this session on your calendar!

Sheila is seeking sponsorships to support the team and their efforts towards Inclusive Flight! Any individual or corporate support is most welcome.

If you have questions about how your support is publicly recognized, please email her at hello@sheilaxu.com
